This January, we celebrate the life and legacy of one of the most renowned Black artists in the dance community: Mr. Alvin Ailey. His impact can be seen just in the sheer number of dance studios and companies that exist to create space for Black dancers.
Alvin Ailey was born on January 5, 1931, in Rogers, Texas. His experiences of life in the rural South would later inspire some of his most memorable works.
Mr. Ailey was a pioneer of programs promoting arts in education, particularly those benefiting underserved communities.
“When Mr. Ailey died on December 1, 1989, The New York Times said of him, “you didn’t need to have known [him] personally to have been touched by his humanity, enthusiasm, and exuberance and his courageous stand for multi-racial brotherhood.” (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Website 2023).
Alvin Ailey’s legacy and voice has inspired generations of Black creatives and artists, and will surely continue for generations to come. His legendary work “Revelations” ignited an influence that has spread far and wide within the artistry of black creatives.
Ms. Jay Skeete-Lee, the founder of Rahway Dance Theatre, was inspired to create her own expression of contemporary black dance entitled “Ecclesia”. She set contemporary ballet work to the Black gospel acapellas, modern R&B, and contemporary instrumentals which was featured at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, McDonald’s GospelFest, Dance New Jersey, and artist showcases throughout the tri-state area. We will forever honor Ms. Lee’s voice and contribution to dance as a Black creative, a visionary, and a mother to generations of dancers at RDT!
